From Hair Horror to Glossy Goals: What is a Brazilian Blow Dry?
Ever felt like smooth, shiny, magazine-cover-worthy hair was just always out of reach? Enter: the Brazilian Blow Dry. A revolutionary treatment for creating that glossy, red carpet look, a Brazilian Blow Dry is just what you need if you’re tired of fighting your frizz.
What is a Brazilian Blow Dry?
To make a loooong story short, a Brazilian Blow Dry transforms frizzy, untameable hair to silky smoothness. It’s all about taming your fly aways semi-permanently - saves you LOADS of styling time, so you can get that extra 30 minutes of beauty sleep. Essential stuff.
A Brazilian Blow Dry doesn’t force you to commit to pin-straight locks either. You can still curl or wave your hair however you like - just without worrying about frizz!
Frizz affects us all, and luckily enough, a Brazilian Blow Dry works with ANY hair type. From fine to coarse, straight to coiled, every hair type can benefit from a Brazilian if you’re fighting your fly aways on the daily.
What Ingredients are in a Brazilian Blow Dry?
Brazilian blow dries can work their silky smooth magic thanks to a special little ingredient called keratin. It actually already exists in your hair and nails! It’s what makes your hair ‘elastic’ and able to withstand anything you throw at it without snapping.
Your keratin can be depleted though! While we love our bouncy blow dries, regular heat styling (like using your hair dryer, straighteners, curling tongs… Anything that uses heat to style) can leave your hair feeling thirsty and brittle and looking frizzy.
The liquid keratin used in a Brazilian blow dry creates a shield around each strand of your hair, transforming its appearance and texture. It’s able to create super silky hair by sealing the cuticle and protecting the hair from external damage. During your Brazilian, the keratin is applied in oil and usually comes in the form of berries and seeds!
But beware - It’s possible to have too much of a good thing, and it’s the same with keratin. Too much keratin can break your hair as well. That’s why it’s so important to ALWAYS leave keratin treatments to the professionals (aka us!)
What Happens During a Brazilian Blow Dry?
A Brazilian starts off with a lush hair wash. Think DEEEEEP Spring cleaning for your hair. This is to make sure that your hair is 100% free of any dirt or build up. The cleaner your hair is, the better the keratin will perform!
Your stylist will then very carefully apply the liquid keratin formula to your hair in sections. Then, it’s time for the blow dry part of your Brazilian! After you’ve had a blow dry, your stylist uses a hot iron to seal in the treatment.
After one final wash, it’s time for a deep conditioning treatment to make your hair uber soft before the last blow dry!
What’s the After-Care for a Brazilian blow dry?
With the proper after-care, your Brazilian blow dry can last up to 3 months.
Like all hair treatments, it is heavily dependent on your hair type and condition. If your hair is fairly damaged, the keratin is definitely doing its job, but won’t get you to total silky smoothness the first time! The more keratin treatments you do, the longer your results will be each time.
Sun seekers, listen up. If you’re going on holiday, your Brazilian blow dry is likely to last a shorter amount of time. With all the salt water, sun, sweating and washing you’ll be doing, it unfortunately affects the treatment.
To keep your keratin lasting for as long as possible, it’s important to use sulfate-free shampoos. (We avoid BAD sulfates in our hair care products, but natural sulfates are completely fine.) We love Davines’ OI range and Olaplex’s No.4 & 5 for long lasting keratin smoothness.
