How to look after your tape extensions

BY CLARKE ELLIOTT

Hey, gorgeous! If you are rocking those amazing tape hair extensions, you know how life- changing they can be! You feel fabulous, look incredible, and can take on the world with much-added confidence. However, we all know that with great hair comes great responsibility. That's why taking care of your tape hair extensions is crucial for their longevity and keeping them vibrant and healthy. In this blog, we'll give you some fantastic and easy-to-follow tips to ensure your tape hair extensions last as long as possible!

Wash with Care

Proper Washing Tips for Tape Hair Extensions

One of the essential things to remember while washing your tape hair extensions is to be gentle. The first thing to do is to detangle your hair before stepping into the shower. Then wash your hair in a downward direction, and apply only a sulfate-free shampoo followed by a conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends. Do not use a circular or scrubbing motion, as it may cause the extensions to loosen or fall out. Then rinse thoroughly, towel-dry gently, and let them air-dry as much as possible. At the salon, we love the β€˜Acidic Bonding Range’ by Redken, which cares for your hair and extensions.

Drying with a Difference

Drying Tips for Tape Hair Extensions

When drying your hair, take extra care since the extensions are delicate. Wrap a microfiber towel around your hair and get as much water out as possible. Avoid rubbing the hair with the towel or blow-drying it, as it may cause damage or loosen the tape bonding. Instead, let your hair air dry until it's about 80% dry, then use a hairdryer on medium heat to finish drying and style as desired (we have a beach wave or a bouncy blowout at SCL). We love the 'GHD helios' at SCL. It is Samantha's favourite hairdryer!

Brush it Out

Brushing Tips to Avoid Tangles and Matting.

Brushing your hair is a simple task, but it's extremely important to use the right brush. Use a 'Mason Pearson style brush or a 'Tangle Teezer' to detangle your hair from the bottom up. Begin at the ends and work your way up in a gentle motion. Avoid tugging or pulling on the extensions, as this may cause them to loosen or become damaged.

Creativity Is Key

Get Creative with Hairstyles That Don't Damage Your Tape Hair Extensions

Styling tape hair extensions can be fun and effortless, just as long as you avoid damaging the delicate tape. Instead of using harsh heat tools or products, try some creative hairstyles that won't put too much tension on your hair extensions. Loose braids, buns, and ponytails can help keep your extensions looking flawless while preventing tangling and matting. Plus, these hairstyles are perfect for when you're on the go or need something quick and easy for work. If you need heat tools, use a heat protectant and keep the temperature at a low to moderate setting. Our favourite hot tool at the salon is the GHD platinum+ straightener because it provides a smooth, sleek finish without damaging the hair. To protect and preserve your extensions while you sleep, use a silk pillowcase or wrap your hair in a silk scarf to minimise friction and prevent tangling. With creativity and care, you can achieve a stunning look without damaging your tape hair extensions!

Sweet Dreams

How to Properly Sleep with Tape Hair Extensions

Sleeping with hair extensions can be tricky, especially when you want to maintain their perfect look for as long as possible. I recommend putting your extensions into one or two loose braids to the side before bed to avoid tangling, matting, or damage while sleeping. This will also help prevent creasing and flattening from sleeping on them directly. Plus, you'll wake up with soft, sexy beach waves, making it easy to style them quickly in the morning.

Holiday Vibes

Tips for Taking Care of Your Tape Hair Extensions on Holiday

When you are on holiday, it's essential to take extra care of your hair extensions due to the sun, sand, and sea. Always wear a hat to protect your hair from the sun's UV rays, and avoid wearing them in saltwater or chlorinated water. Rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water after swimming, and gently towel dry. Be mindful of how you style your hair on holiday, opting for braids or a high ponytail to keep your extensions looking fabulous. Don't forget to give your hair some extra TLC when you're back home, too, with deep conditioning and regular maintenance to keep them healthy and vibrant. Have an amazing holiday, and rock those braids on the beach! 🌴 🌊

Why Tape Hair Extensions Can Turn Pink

Just a friendly warning for those of you who have light-toned hair extensions - have you noticed that they turn pinkish after being exposed to the sun for a while? Trust us; we know how frustrating it can be to have your hair extensions change colours unexpectedly. But we've found the culprit responsible for this - sunscreens containing Avobenzone and Octocrylene. These ingredients can create a chemical reaction that alters the hue of your extension. So before applying sunscreen during your holidays, check the ingredients and avoid those containing Avobenzone and Octocrylene.

Don't let pink extensions ruin your summer fun - just be mindful and choose the right product so you can have flawlessly coloured hair extensions all season long.

Top tip: To be safe, tie your extensions up during the day to avoid them touching your skin, particularly if you are swimming or sweating, as it could irritate your delicate skin.

Taking care of your tape hair extensions is important to maintaining their vibrancy, health and longevity. Remember to be gentle, use the right products and tools, and get regular maintenance. Follow these tips, and your tape hair extensions will look fantastic for months to come. Have fun experimenting with your style, and, most importantly, rock your new mane like a boss! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
