5 Reasons Why You Should be Using a Clarifying Shampoo

Plus, a round up of the best ones for your hair type!

WHAT IS A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO?

Clarifying shampoos often fall under the term 'exfoliating', 'purifying' and 'cleansing.' But what do all these terms really mean when it comes to your haircare?

A clarifying shampoo is designed to completely get rid of any product build up and oils to leave your hair super super clean! Everyone should be incorporating a clarifying shampoo in to their hair care routine, whether its once a week or completely swapping out your regular shampoo for a clarifying one.

We're going to summarise 5 reasons why you should be using a clarifying shampoo, plus give you some recommendations of the best ones out there!

1) TO GET RID OF PRODUCT BUILD UP

A clarifying shampoo is designed to remove product build up from your hair. This build up is a natural occurance that happens as a result of using shampoos, conditioners and other styling products that contain ingredients such as silicones, waxes and other moisturising ingredients. Whilst these ingredients our great for your hair, helping it look and feel silky and smooth. If we don't use a clarifying shampoo, our hair can get weighed down by this product build up, causing it to get greasy fast!

The R&Co Oblivion Clarifying Shampoo contains a whole mix of active ingredients including witch hazel, tea tree oil and vitamin C. This product is specificially designed to tackle product build up without overly drying out your hair. When using this shampoo, let it sit on your scalp for up to two minutes before rinsing out. The result? A squeaky clean scalp that has you wondering why you didn't know about this product sooner!

2) YOU HAVE OILY ROOTS

Oily root girls....we feel you! Dealing with oily roots can be challenging. You may feel like no matter how often you wash your hair, it just gets oily! Luckily, clarifying shampoos are here to help you.

Using a clarifying shampoo weekly will help your scalp rebalance its natural oil levels. The Leonor Greyl Balancing Shampoo is a Parisian gem! It purifies and cleanses oily scalp and also contains conditioning properties, repairing dry length and ends while giving shine and volume. It's one of the few clarifying shampoos out there that will add moisture to your ends, whilst clarifying and rebalancing your scalp!

3) YOUR SHOWER HAS HARD WATER

When it comes to hard water and your hair, we made an entirely separate blog post all about this - read it here! Hard water can be EXTREMELY drying to your hair so when it comes to using a clarifying shampoo, you need a product that isn't going to overly strip the natural oils from your hair.

Our recommendation? Living Proof’s Triple Detox Shampoo! This shampoo targets build-up from these three main causes: products, pollution, and hard water. It's safe for colour treated hair, soothes the scalp from any itchiness or irritation and you can customise your usage depending on the degree of hard water.

TIP: If you're only showering in hard water, we would recommend switching out your regular shampoo for this one! If not, stick to using it weekly.

4) YOU HAVE VERY FINE AND FLAT HAIR

Extremely fine and flat hair can feel weighed down. It can also have a tendency to get greasy quickly as it can absorb less sebum (aka oil) and moisture than thicker and coarser hair.

If this sounds like your hair type, we have a clarifying shampoo for you! The Davines MELU Shampoo is designed to gently cleanse the hair whilst preventing any breakage which fine hair is particulary prone to. It's gentle enough to use as your everyday shampoo yet clarifying enough to get say ‘bye Felicia!’ to that oily scalp!

5) AS A PRE MASK STEP

We're ALLL about hair masks for every type of hair! From the Olaplex No.8 Moisture Mask to Davines OI Hair Butter, there are some pretty life changing masks out there that will bring sooo much moisture and hydration back in to your hair!

A little secret tip to really get the absolute MOST from these masks....use a clarifying shampoo beforehand! This will allow your hair to absorb even more benefits from the mask! Our fave pre mask clarifying shampoo is the Davines SOLU Shampoo. We just can't get enough of Davines tbh...

Let us know if you try out any of these clarifying shampoos and stay tuned for next week as we have an exciting festive blog post coming up…
